Bios

Prof. Purnima Kumar

Prof. Purnima Kumar is the William and Mary K. Najjar Endowed professor of Dentistry and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She received her dental degree from Annamalai University and MS in Periodontology from Dr. MGR Medical University in India. She later received her Certificate in Periodontology and Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Microbiology from The Ohio State University. Prof. Kumar is the Principal Investigator of Oral Microbial Ecology Laboratory at the University of Michigan that has been continuously funded through the NIH for over 15 years. She also collaborates extensively with the oral healthcare industry to develop therapeutics for microbial modulation.
She is a Fellow of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program, the American Association of Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research and the American and International College of Dentists. She has authored over 100 papers and book chapters and serves as the Co-Editor of Clinical Advances in Periodontics, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology, Periodontology 2000, Nature Scientific Reports and Microbiome. She is an active clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator, has mentored several pre-dental, dental, master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral students. She serves as the Chair of the Continuing Education Oversight Committee for the AAP and is a member of the AAPs Taskforce for Future Science. She is a member of the Council of Scientific Affairs of the ADA. Dr. Kumar has served on various committees of IADR and is presently the Vice-President of the Periodontal Research Group.  She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and actively participates in patient care limited to periodontics and implant surgery.

Professor Mariano Sanz

Professor Mariano Sanz obtained the Medical Degree at the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM) (1981) and later the Specialty of Stomatology (1983) and Doctorate in Medicine at the same university (1985). He then moved to UCLA (USA) to specialize in Periodontology (1988) and returned to UCM to become Professor of Periodontology (1989). Since then, he has held the position of Chairman of Periodontology, Director of the ETEP (aetiology and therapy of periodontal and peri-implant diseases) Research Group and chairman of Postgraduate Periodontology (EFP accredited Perio Specialty Program). He is also a Professor Type II at the University of Oslo. Prof Sanz received five honorary doctorate degrees by the Universities of Goteborg (Sweden), Coimbra (Portugal), San Sebastian (Santiago de Chile), University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Medical University of Warsaw. He is the past Dean from UCM, past President of the Spanish Society of Periodontology, The European Federation of Periodontology, and the European Federation of the IADR. He has published more than 400 scientific publications and he is an international lecturer in topics related to Periodontology, Implant Dentistry and Dental Education.

Prof Sašo Ivanovski

Prof Sašo Ivanovski is the Dean of the School of Dentistry at The University of Queensland, Australia, where he is also Professor of Periodontology and Director of the Centre for Orofacial Regeneration, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation (COR3). He has published over 250 papers in the peer-reviewed literature and leads an internationally recognized research group focusing on regenerative dentistry and tissue engineering, as well as clinical periodontics and implant dentistry.

 

 

A/Prof Ryan Lee

A/Prof Ryan Lee is the Head of Periodontology at the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland. He has published multiple papers in the peer-reviewed international journals, and regularly lectures nationally and internationally. Ryan is a current President for Australian Society of Periodontics (ASP), He was awarded the André Schröder Research Prize in 2022.

 

 

Dr. Jaya Seneviratne

Dr. Jaya Seneviratne is a Senior Lecturer in Periodontology affiliated with the School of Dentistry at the University of Queensland, Australia. Currently, he serves as the Director of Higher Degree Research. Dr. Seneviratne is internationally recognized as an academic and researcher in the field of Dentistry and Oral Biology. His track record encompasses over 100 publications in reputed international journals, including all top journals in Dental Research. His research interests include oral microbiome and oral-systemic link.
