Eight new Emeritus Professors

5 May 2021

The title of Emeritus Professor is granted to those who have given honourable service over an extended period in a position of high influence.

Eight such titles have been recently bestowed on academics from UQ’s Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, across a variety of fields.

Emeritus Professor Wayne Hall

Formerly Director of UQ’s Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research, Professor Hall has advised the World Health Organisation and federal government bodies on several matters.

His work on the health effects of cannabis use, the effectiveness of drug substitution treatment, heroin trials, the effect of illicit drugs on the global burden of disease, and other matters of addiction and ethics were all seen as ground-breaking.

Emeritus Professor Jenny Ziviani

Professor Ziviani has spent her career focused on child health, family-centred practice, and motivational aspects of interventions.

A Professor in Occupational Therapy from UQ’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, she was a chief investigator of the Australasian Cerebral Palsy Clinical Trials Network and was previously Professor of Children’s Allied Health Research.

Emeritus Professor Peter Little

Previously Head of UQ’s School of Pharmacy, Professor Little was an Order of Australia recipient for services to people with diabetes and diabetes research.

Formerly National President of Diabetes Australia, he was also Founding Secretary (later President) of The Australian Vascular Biology Society, and Head of Pharmacy at RMIT Melbourne.

Emeritus Professor Justin Kenardy

Well-known for his work on the psychological effects of trauma, Professor Kenardy has been a strong advocate for interdisciplinary research, collaborating with a broad range of medical specialists and even economists.

He has received both the Australian Psychological Society’s President’s Award for Distinguished Contribution to Society and the Ian Campbell Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Clinical Psychology.

Emeritus Professor Kenneth Pakenham

Professor Pakenham served as the Chair of the Registration Committee of the Psychologists’ Board of Queensland for over a decade.

His research and clinical work in psychology has spanned more than 40 years. He was Director of UQ’s Psychology Clinic for seven years, was Honours Convenor for three years and on editorial boards for six international journals.

Emeritus Professor Roy Baumeister

A social psychologist, Professor Baumeister arrived at UQ in 2016 after decades of work in the psychology field, particularly concerning willpower, self-control and self-esteem. He also explored factors in sexual attraction, free will, the need to belong, and irrational or self-destructive behaviours.

Professor Baumeister has been described as one of the “most influential” and “highly-cited” psychology academics of contemporary times.

Emeritus Professor Laurence Walsh

Within UQ’s School of Dentistry, Professor Walsh was the research group leader for advanced materials and technologies for 21 years. He remains active as a Discipline Lead in Special Needs Dentistry, hands-on research and student supervision.

Early in his career, Professor Walsh won an AMP Biomedical Research Award and several awards from the International Association for Dental Research. He later won the highest award for senior investigators in dentistry and, in 2018, was made an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Emeritus Professor Paul Monsour

Professor Monsor lectured extensively on all aspects of dento-maxillofacial radiology after becoming a pioneer in the field early in his career.

His interests have also centred around radiation protection in dentistry and the use of cone beam imaging. He initially graduated from UQ in 1978 as an Honours student from the Bachelor of Dental Science.
