Fluoride in drinking water has no effect on child brain development

Professor Loc Do from UQ’s School of Dentistry spoke to Brisbane Times about new research which has found water fluoridation has no impact on children’s brain development.

The study, led by scientists from the University of Queensland, compared the brain development of children who had been exposed to fluoridated water in their first five years of life to those who had not.

Lead author, UQ Professor Loc Do, said they found no difference in the brain development between the two groups on any measure.

“Exposure to fluoridated water in the first five years of life was not associated with any detriment to behavioural, emotional or executive functions,” he said.

“By contrast, there are well documented health benefits to adding fluoride to drinking water supply.”
