The study has three main aims:
Understand needs and barriers
We will find out about the oral healthcare needs of young people with intellectual disability, including what makes it difficult to access dental care and what helps them receive the care they need. We will ask parents and carers, healthcare professionals and education providers about their experiences.
Co-design an oral healthcare package
We will work together with young people, families, carers and professionals to develop practical tools and support for good oral health. This may include an oral health assessment and referral tool, guidance for carers and support staff, and preventive dental care that can be provided in settings where young people receive care and support.
Evaluate its impact
We will assess whether the oral healthcare package is helpful, practical and acceptable to the people who use it. We will look at whether it helps prevent dental problems, makes daily oral care easier, and improves the oral health and quality of life of young people with intellectual disability.
Through this research, we aim to develop a sustainable and person-centred approach to oral healthcare that can help young people with intellectual disability achieve better oral health now and throughout their lives.
