Professor Saso Ivanovski, Head of The University of Queensland’s School of Dentistry has been recognised as a world leader in regenerative periodontal medicine research with a prestigious international award.
The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Periodontal Research Group (PRG) Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine is awarded to those who have made significant contributions in basic or clinical research in this field.
As a clinician-scientist, Professor Ivanovski has established an international standing in the areas of periodontics, regenerative dentistry and medicine, tissue engineering, biofabrication and cell biology.
When he’s not fulfilling duties as the Head of School, Professor Ivanovski also leads an interdisciplinary team seeking to advance orofacial regeneration, reconstruction and rehabilitation at UQ’s COR3.
COR3 engage with students, industry, the dental profession and the general public to drive learning, innovations and discovery that improves patient outcomes through high quality research and education.
By using revolutionary techniques such as 3D printing technology to rebuild human teeth, bones and soft tissue, the team have positioned UQ as a trailblazer in the field of regenerative dentistry.
Each year, around half of Australians aged over 50 suffer from jawbone defects resulting in an annual cost of $8 billion and in 2019, with severe tooth loss responsible for 67 per cent of the $187.6 billion in global productivity losses due to dental diseases.
This important research is helping to restore chewing ability, rebuild patients’ smiles and return their self esteem.
Professor Ivanovski has more than 200 publications in the peer-reviewed international literature and a well-established record of competitive grant funding from NHMRC and industry sources
