The concept of regeneration in dentistry is not new, indeed the ability of the dental pulp to retain viability and function has been known for more than 200 years. It was much more recently, beginning with the case report by Banchs & Trope in 2004, that more modern ideas of tissue engineering were considered in endodontics. The clinical application, a basic cell free approach, undertaken well before any scientific underpinning was available, seemed to result in acceptable outcomes. However, questions remained regarding the protocol and true end point of the procedures.

We know now that pulp regeneration, as in the re-constitution of functional and similar tissues, does not occur with contemporary methods.

This presentation will take a detailed look at clinical protocols, their benefits, and shortcomings as well as outcomes. Then, the question of success and failure will be revisited, ultimately enabling clinicians and patients to find a path forward in cases where pulp regeneration may be desirable.

About Seminar series

The School of Dentistry Seminar Series is an opportunity to highlight outstanding research both within the School and from national and international guest speakers.

All are welcome to attend, including academic and professional staff, visitors, students, industry partners, dental industry professionals and the general public. Seminars are held at various times at the Oral Health Centre, Herston, and online.

In addition to our general School series, additional seminars will be presented by our various research groups.
