Thank you for your interest in studying at the University of Queensland (UQ) School of Dentistry.

Higher Degrees by Research (HDR)

The HDR programs at the School of Dentistry are the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

How to Apply

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Please check whether or not you meet UQ’s entry requirements for HDR.

If English is not your first language you will need to meet UQ’s English language proficiency requirements for HDR. The full policy can be viewed on the UQ Policy and Procedures Library.

Step 2: Find a Supervisor and Topic

To search for appropriate advisors you may wish to search UQ Researchers or the School of Dentistry Our People page. You may also wish to refer to the School of Dentistry Research page for information on our research streams. You can also check out this helpful list of current available topics.

Please note that it does not imply that you should contact a large number of potential supervisors to ask for their supervision, but instead refine your search to academic staff that have strong overlapping interests and experience with your proposed field of research.

Step 3: Expression of Interest

Please submit the following documents to your potential supervisor/s:

  1. A fully completed Expression of Interest (EOI) form (DOCX, 109.8 KB).
  2. A brief 2-3 page proposal for your MPhil/PhD, including a brief background/motivation for the study, hypothesis/aim and objective and brief methodology/ Please be aware that research funds are limited.
  3. Your CV. If you have publications please indicate which of these publications are indexed (eg. Web of Science, Pubmed,) and include details of your h-index, citations. This will allow an assessment of your professional and research experience and we are then able to offer advice on your competitiveness if you require a university scholarship. Scholarships are highly competitive as you compete with applicants across the university. The school does not offer scholarships, it is a university-wide process.

Once invited to submit an application by a Principal Advisor, you may proceed with submitting your application online. Your Principal Advisor should confirm in writing via email that they are happy to support your application, and should copy in Dr Jaya Seniviratne, Director of Higher Degree by Research Director (DHDR) jaya.seneviratne@uq.edu.au and the HDR Liaison Officer hdr.dentistry@enquire.uq.edu.au.

Step 4: Apply Online for Admission

Once you have reached agreement on supervision with an advisor and have obtained approval from the Director (Research Training), please complete an online application.

We have put together a guide on how to apply for a research degree - simply follow these steps. Each application for admission and scholarship is assessed on a case-by-case basis by a UQ Graduate School admissions specialist.

You must upload:

  • Academic CV
  • Academic transcript for all post-secondary study undertaken, complete or incomplete, including the institution grading scale*
  • Award certificates for all completed post-secondary study*
  • Evidence for meeting UQ's English language proficiency requirements (which must be valid at commencement date)
  • School of Dentistry EOI form
  • Research Proposal

*Certified copies of the original language transcripts and award certificates and official English translations (if applicable) are required.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to assist with tuition fees, living expenses and research costs.

You do not need to apply separately for scholarships. If you wish to be considered for a UQ Graduate School Scholarship while undertaking your PhD/MPhil, simply indicate this on your online application for admission.

Additional scholarship opportunities, including those from external organisations which will require a separate application, can be viewed on UQ's Scholarships page.

UQ is also currently offering Earmarked scholarships to support Category 1 project grants for prospective PhD applicants who will be enrolled through the School of Dentistry.
