We will introduce the DEnTRegen (Dental Engineering and Tissue Regeneration) program at the University of Otago (New Zealand), with a focus on innovative research to produce antimicrobial constructs for bone grafting. We aim to give an overview of lipoic-capped silver nanoparticles, bovine lactoferrin and naturally derived products for antimicrobial effect in grafts and hydrogels.

Associate Professor Dawn Coates and Dina Abdelmoneim

Based at the Faculty of Dentistry at Otago University for the last 15 years Dr Coates runs projects primarily examining angiogenesis, osteogenesis and stem cells. The team has conducted significant research in the field of dental bioengineering with a focus on novel antimicrobial grafting constructs. Dr Coates also has current stem cell research projects examining dental pulp, adipose-derived, and periosteal-derived stem cells. She has over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 3 patents, and has supervised to completion 24 doctoral students. She currently has 6 doctoral students working on a variety of projects. Dina is a qualified dentist with postgraduate training in oral biomaterials science. She is currently a full-time PhD student and a part-time assistant research fellow at the Dental School, University of Otago. Her PhD project involves designing non-antibiotic antimicrobial oral biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration via incorporating nano-silver. She employs in-vitro lab and in-vivo experiments and develops testing models to better understand the performance of these materials in a complex body environment.
