Speaker biography

Professor Elise VERRON (PharmD, PhD, HDR) has over 15 years of research experience in tissue engineering, with a particular focus on osteoarticular and dental regenerative medicine. Her expertise encompasses the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and biological evaluation of biomaterials, enabling her to develop next-generation biomaterials with tailored properties to address unmet clinical needs in bone reconstruction under both physiological and pathological conditions.

More recently, her research has expanded towards nanotechnology for biomedical applications, through an international collaboration with Dr Karan GULATI focusing on the design and development of nanostructured biomaterials for dental tissue engineering. She has also initiated an innovative research project in nanomedicine for cancer therapy, further broadening her research activities towards advanced therapeutic approaches.

Professor Elise VERRON has authored more than 80 scientific and scholarly publications, including original research articles, review articles, scientific and science-outreach book chapters, educational books, and patent. She is actively involved in the supervision and mentoring of PhD candidates, PharmD students, and Master’s students, contributing to the training of the next generation of researchers in biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and nanomedicine.

Seminar title:

Calcium Phosphate Biomaterials in Bone and Dental Tissue Engineering From Bone Substitutes to Next-Generation Regenerative Biomaterials

Abstract:

This talk will provide an overview of calcium phosphate biomaterials and their applications in bone, joint, and dental tissue engineering. It will first address the clinical need for bone substitutes and the limitations of current approaches. The rationale behind the use of calcium phosphates as biomaterials for bone regeneration will then be discussed, with particular emphasis on their chemical and biological properties. Different calcium phosphate-based materials and their applications in bone and dental surgery will be presented. Finally, the talk will explore current strategies to improve their biological, structural, and functional properties, moving from conventional bone substitutes towards next-generation regenerative and multifunctional biomaterials.

About Seminar series

The School of Dentistry Seminar Series is an opportunity to highlight outstanding research both within the School and from national and international guest speakers.

All are welcome to attend, including academic and professional staff, visitors, students, industry partners, dental industry professionals and the general public. Seminars are held at various times at the Oral Health Centre, Herston, and online.

In addition to our general School series, additional seminars will be presented by our various research groups.
